I am not a patient person. I tend to take a while thinking about a decision, but when I make that decision, I jump in with all my feet. When I got engaged, a decided during the day at work that I was going to propose. I called Rhubarb Jones who was the morning DJ at the radio station I worked at part time. He had all the hook ups. He called ahead for me to Gainesville Jewelry store and told them to “treat me right”. I left work early and drove up there and picked out the ring that I knew she liked, paid for it, and was out the door. I proposed that night. No waiting around or planning the “perfect” scenario or anything. Like Billy Crystal said in “When Harry Met Sally”, “when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” I had made the decision and therefore, it had to happen right away.
I’m confused when I drive why don’t people go faster. Don’t they want to get to where they’re going?
Voice over is a tough business for someone who’s impatient. If someone reaches out to me for an opportunity, I’m ready to go and get it done right then. Often it takes days if not weeks for the production to finalize a script and in that time they may even change direction and go with someone else. When I book something or get an audition, I need to get it out of my inbox as soon as possible. I don’t like those things hanging over my head. Not to sound like a job is a negative, it isn’t. I just want to have it done.
I’ve had to learn to step back, take a breath and just let things happen. Learn what’s not in my control and what’s not in my control. Just keep putting good things out there and good things will come back. Always remain positive. Always keep working and making things happen. Voice over is like a mule, the more you push it or pull it or try to force it, the more stubborn it is and won’t do what you want.
