I am from the South, specifically Atlanta (Northside babies, let’s hear ya!). Coca Cola is also from the South, also Atlanta-ish. Anyone knows that when you’re down here and you order a drink at a restaurant, it’s a “coke” no matter what you want. It’s not “soda” or “pop” or heaven forbid, a Pepsi. It’s a Coke. I grew up drinking Coke. Is it good for you? No. Will it make you fat, give you cavities and diabetes? Yeah, probably. Do I still drink it? Well, I would except I can’t. After my gastric bypass surgery, I can’t have anything carbonated. I could wait until it goes flat and drink a Coke Zero, but what’s the point?
I also collect Coca Cola advertising. I really enjoy the marketing aspect of it. It was simple way back in the early 1900’s. “Ice Cold” was all they needed. “Delicious and Refreshing” was another slogan. “Coke is it” or “Catch the Wave” were also good messages. Simpler is better.
I was a member of the Atlanta Chapter of the Coca Cola Collector’s Club for 10 years and wrote the newsletter every other month for 4 of those years. I loved researching, writing, and most of all learning about the big brand in Atlanta. I became an amateur historian of Coca Cola. I’ve been to old bottling plants, searched out signs, conventions (yes, there are Coca Cola collector conventions, the big one is Springtime in Atlanta held each Easter weekend). There’s not much I don’t know.
So it came as a surprise to me when I saw a TikTok of someone talking about Kosher Coke. Now, Coke is kosher all the time anyway, but during Passover, it’s not due to it’s high fructose corn syrup. The TikTok referred to a special edition of Coke that’s made with sucrose like the Mexican cokes that’s Kosher for Passover. Those bottles are indicated by a yellow cap. I had no idea this existed. Come to find out, Coke has been doing this since 1935! Amazing. So if you see one of those yellow topped Cokes, grab it. People say it tastes better. Let me know since I can’t drink it.
Now Mike, you say. What the hell does this have to do with perspective or voiceover, even?
Well, here we go. Your perspective comes in when you can say either, that’s pretty neat about the Kosher Cokes or you can say, why doesn’t Coke to that same thing for this group or that group?
You can’t control what happens in the world. You can control how you react to what happens and how you choose to look at it. My advice? Go with the positive approach. You’ll find that not only are you happier, but also life is just that little bit easier to deal with.
Great blog as usual, Mike. Thank you for giving, and for perpetuating the positive! Now go have a Coke and a smile. 🙂
